New border transit hubs to be established between Afghanistan and Iran

Iran and Afghanistan have agreed on building a transit hub on the border between them, in another move to bolster the cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Afghanistan and Iran are set to build transit hubs on both sides of their shared border, according to a Monday announcement by the Afghan Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.
An Afghan ministerial delegation is in Iran for talks on the matter, according to Tolo News.
"This [the Afghan] delegation will identify suitable areas for establishing transit truck parks between Afghanistan and Iran, particularly in regions such as Chabahar, to support the development of transportation facilities," announced the Transport Ministry spokesperson Hekmatullah Asifi.
He added that "This visit will help translate joint cooperation between the two countries into practical infrastructure development," while noting that the visit aims to identify suitable locations for transit hubs on both sides of the border and discuss further development of cross-border transportation with Iranian officials.
Afghanistan and Iran's bilateral trade surpassed $3.3 billion in 2024, the Afghan Commerce Ministry reported.
In November of 2021, Saeed Mohammad, Iran's Executive Director of Free and Economic Zones, stated that trade between Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan stood at 1.5 billion dollars at the time, and the bilateral trade was projected to increase to $5 billion.
Saeed Mohammad emphasized Iran's goal to boost trade with eastern nations, revealing that the Supreme Council of Iranian Free and Economic Zones is developing an action plan to launch free economic activities in southeastern Iran's Sistan region.
