Ennahda Leader: Saied a Red Line
Muhammad Al-Qumani, a Tunisian MP and leader of the Ennahda Movement stated that the movement is now supportive of the Tunisian President's measures.
During an interview with the national radio, the head of the Tunisian Ennahda Movement’s Political Crisis Management Committee, Mohamed al-Qumani, said today, that the movement “received angry messages from the general public, and the youth group, and extracted mistakes from the post-2011 process and subsequent crises, leading to the intervention of the President of the Republic on July 25.”
“But unfortunately the crisis has not yet been resolved,” he added.
Al-Qumani’s remarks come as the exceptional measures taken by Tunisian President Kais Saied are approaching their deadline.
Ennahda’s stance regarding the President’s decisions, taken on July 25, was mostly pejorative, going as far as calling them a coup. Yet it seems the movement has reconsidered its position since then.
Al-Qumani explained that "firstly, state institutions, including the security and army, turned out to be supportive of the decisions of the President of the Republic, and secondly, his measures were relatively accepted by the political elites."
Stressing the idea that Tunisia is now different from what it was pre-25 July notably when it comes to fighting corruption, al-Qumani considered that “the President of the Republic is a red line like all state institutions,” recalling the multiple occasions in which the President mentioned assassinations attempts targeting him without the matter being investigated.
He added that Ennahda "demanded a quick investigation to reveal the truth, to reassure the Tunisians and to secure Tunisia's security because the president's security is one of its security."
Yesterday, the Ennahda Movement denounced the conspiracies that threaten Tunisia's security and the personal security of the President of the Republic, calling in a statement the state's security and judicial agencies to investigate the matter to reveal those involved, warning against internal and external plots that are working to drag the country into instability.
