The Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, welcomed the joint statement issued by the presidency of the international conference on the "two-state solution" during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York.

Hamas stressed the need to translate international positions into practical measures that compel the occupation to commit to a permanent ceasefire, conduct prisoner exchanges, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, withdraw from the Gaza Strip, halt settlement expansion, and end "annexation" and land grab.

In its statement on Tuesday, the movement also welcomed positions aimed at ensuring justice for the Palestinian people and fulfilling their aspirations of liberation and return to their land, praising calls to end the occupation and establish the State of Palestine.

Hamas underscored that leaving the occupation government without accountability, amid its ongoing crimes of genocide and starvation, constitutes a stain of shame on all those who support the occupation.

The movement also reaffirmed that it, together with all Resistance forces, forms a national front for liberation and return, emphasizing that "the weapons of the resistance are a national right guaranteed by all international laws and conventions, until the end of the occupation and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital."

International recognition of Palestine gains momentum

The statement followed a new wave of global recognition of Palestine. Several countries, led by France, officially recognized the State of Palestine during the opening of the international conference on the "two-state solution" at the UN. This followed coordinated recognitions in September 2025 by the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal.

Hamas hailed these recognitions as "an affirmation of the Palestinian people's right to their land and sacred places, and to establish their independent state with al-Quds as its capital."

However, the movement has consistently warned that symbolic recognition alone is insufficient without concrete steps to halt “Israel’s” genocidal war in Gaza and confront "annexation" and Judaization projects in the West Bank and occupied al-Quds.

Hamas on Palestinian statehood

Hamas previously welcomed international stances expressed at the UN Conference on the Question of Palestine in July 2025, which endorsed the Palestinian right to sovereignty. The movement described recognition of a fully sovereign Palestinian state as "a natural and legitimate right of the Palestinian people and the outcome of their long-standing struggle."

The movement has repeatedly urged the international community to isolate "Israel," impose sanctions on its leaders, and hold them accountable as war criminals instead of shielding them or promoting normalization agreements with their regime.

Additionally, Hamas has historically expressed openness to political solutions under clear conditions:

  • Ending the occupation and lifting the siege on Gaza;
  • Establishing a Palestinian state along pre-1967 borders with al-Quds as its capital;
  • Guaranteeing the right of return for Palestinian refugees;
  • Rejecting attempts to link recognition of Palestine to normalization with “Israel";
  • Resistance remains a national right until the occupation ends.
