ISIS cell targeted in Idlib, Syria; new group claims attack on Hmeimim

A Syrian security operation in Khan Sheikhoun has killed one ISIS member, while an armed group has claimed responsibility for an attack on Russia’s Hmeimim airbase in Latakia.

The Director of the Security Directorate in Idlib Province (northwest Syria), Lieutenant Colonel Omar al-Ayham, announced the killing of a member of a cell affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) and the severe injury of another on Thursday.

ISIS member killed in Khan Sheikhoun

Al-Ayham stated that security units received a report of the assassination of a Ministry of Defense member in the Khan Sheikhoun area. After mobilizing and pursuing the cell, the units managed to kill one member and seriously wound another in a direct clash.

He also noted that the directorate had received a prior report on March 24 regarding an assassination incident targeting two Ministry of Defense personnel while they were en route to a military outpost on the road between the villages of Maaret Hurmah and Sheikh Mustafa.

'Euphrates Volcano' claims attack on Hmeimim

Meanwhile, an armed group calling itself "Buran al-Furat" (Lit. Euphrates Volcano) claimed responsibility for an attack on the Russian military base in Hmeimim, located in Syria’s western Latakia countryside.

In two separate statements published on social media, the group threatened Russia if it did not withdraw from Syria and confirmed that two of its fighters were killed in the assault two days ago.

The reported group launched an attack on the outskirts of the Russian Hmeimim airbase last Tuesday morning, leading to intense clashes with the base’s garrison. Local sources reported that machine guns were used during the fighting.

According to preliminary information, the confrontation resulted in casualties on both sides, including Russian military personnel.
