Jeremy Corbyn launches new political movement
Your Party UK's emergence signals a continued reshaping of UK left-wing politics, as disaffected voters seek alternatives beyond traditional party lines.

As the British political scene continues to shift towards a multi-party system, and with Prime Minister Keir Starmer steering Labour toward centrist policies, Jeremy Corbyn's initiative seeks to provide a fresh option for disillusioned left-wing voters.
"We're here today to do something dramatic...to found a new Democratic Socialist Party in Britain that can challenge power in our society," Corbyn declared at the inaugural party conference in Liverpool.
Despite the bold vision, the path forward has been far from smooth. Corbyn acknowledged the importance of internal cohesion, stating, "As a party, we’ve got to come together and be united because division and disunity will not serve the interests of the people that we want to represent."
The group, currently operating under the provisional name Your Party UK, was first announced in July by Corbyn and fellow former Labour MP Zarah Sultana. Although four independent MPs initially backed the initiative, two later withdrew, citing internal disputes, including disagreements between Corbyn, 76, and Sultana, 32, over the membership rollout and governance.

Defining the party's identity, direction
The Liverpool conference is expected to formalize the party's name and clarify its leadership structure, whether it will be led by a single figure or collectively by its members. These decisions will be crucial as the party attempts to distinguish itself among other Labour Party alternatives.
Despite the early turmoil, the party has drawn considerable interest. Corbyn recently revealed that around 50,000 people have already signed up, describing the movement as a "mass democratic movement for real change."

Disillusionment with Labour Party policies
A central motivation behind the emergence of Your Party UK is the growing discontent among the British left with Labour's current trajectory under Keir Starmer. Critics argue that the party has abandoned core socialist principles in favor of what they call "Red Toryism," a continuation of Conservative economic and social frameworks.
On foreign policy, Labour's stance on Gaza has deeply alienated many left-wing voters. Accusations that the party is complicit in genocide through continued arms sales to "Israel" and delayed calls for a ceasefire have sparked moral outrage. Leftists also highlight Labour’s slow and symbolic recognition of Palestinian statehood, coupled with the crackdown on pro-Palestine activists, as further evidence of betrayal.
Domestically, Labour's contentious decision to retain the two-child benefit cap sparked outrage, a measure widely seen as contributing to child poverty. The suspension of MPs who opposed the cap further inflamed tensions. Additionally, the Autumn 2025 budget delivered by Chancellor Rachel Reeves drew sharp criticism for maintaining austerity-like measures, cutting support for vulnerable groups, and preserving tax advantages for the wealthy.
Competing for the Left
Corbyn led the Labour Party through two general elections between 2015 and 2020 before being suspended in a controversy involving his response to an antisemitism report. Since then, Starmer has repositioned Labour, achieving victory in the July 2024 general election after 14 years of Conservative rule.

Stuart Hill, a former Labour councillor who left the party after three decades, described joining Your Party UK as a natural next step. Speaking to AFP, he said, "Labour is completely ineffectual," accusing the party of mimicking anti-migrant rhetoric similar to that of Reform.
The new party faces stiff competition, particularly from the Green Party UK, led by 43-year-old Zack Polanski. A recent YouGov poll indicates that only 12% of voters would consider supporting Corbyn’s new movement, compared to 28% for the Greens.
