Moscow Concerned About AUKUS Alliance
Russia is concerned that the AUKUS agreement will grant Australia access to the elite nuclear submarine club.
Russia raised concerns, today, Friday, about the AUKUS defense agreement between Australia, the UK, and the US, which would allow Australia to become one of the few countries that operate nuclear submarines.
TASS quoted Sergei Ryabkov, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, as saying that the current situation is a "great challenge to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime."
Announced by the US, UK, and Australia last month, the AUKUS alliance has angered France and concerned China.
As part of the alliance, the United States and the United Kingdom will help Australia enhance its nuclear capabilities through sharing advanced technologies, which will aid the continent down-under in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines.
The alliance will also see the three nations sharing their know-how on AI, cyber, and quantum technologies, in addition to underwater and long-range missile capabilities.
