Permanent ceasefire necessary in Gaza, Indonesia's FM says

Questioning "Israel's" actions and their misalignment with international law, she said that a permanent ceasefire is necessary to save the lives of civilians in Gaza.

Speaking before delegates at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said she could not bear the sight of thousands of women and children being massacred in Gaza. 

"I cannot stand still to see thousands of deaths of innocent women and children. I cannot stand still to see homes, schools, and hospitals being flattened to rubble," Retno said.

Questioning "Israel's" actions and their misalignment with international law, she said that a permanent ceasefire is necessary to save the lives of civilians in Gaza.

Marsudi further stressed the importance of guaranteeing unimpeded humanitarian aid in Gaza and advocated for supporting UNRWA and other humanitarian agencies working to assist the 1.7 million Palestinians forcibly displaced in the region.

Indicating Indonesia's commitment to increasing support, the Indonesian mentioned the deployment of floating hospitals as part of their efforts to provide assistance.

The top diplomat emphasized that attacks on hospitals, schools, and places of worship should not become accepted as the norm.

She stated that the events in Gaza represent a clear violation of international humanitarian law.

Marsudi further underscored the importance of challenging double standards in the application of international law and ensuring "Israel's" accountability through various relevant forums, including the International Court of Justice.

She insisted on ending the occupation of Palestinian land, emphasizing that military solutions are not viable.

Urging for a credible negotiating process involving Palestine and "Israel" as full members of the UN, the Indonesian Foreign Minister highlighted the necessity of approaching the situation with compassion to bring about humanity and justice.
