Turkey: We Cannot Bear the Burden of Afghan Migrants
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said today after talks with his German counterpart that his country cannot bear the "burden" of a new wave of migrants from Afghanistan.
After talks with his German counterpart Heiko Maas, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said today that Turkey cannot bear the burden of a new wave of migrants coming from Afghanistan.
"As Turkey, we have sufficiently carried out our moral and humanitarian responsibilities regarding migration," Cavusoglu expressed in a joint press conference with Maas.
He stressed that "It is out of the question" for Turkey to take an additional refugee "burden."
About 10 days ago, the Turkish Anadolu Agency reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan dismissed claims by the opposition that his country is hosting 1.5 million Afghan refugees.
Erdogan pointed out that "Turkey does not have any obligation whatsoever to be a safe haven for Afghan refugees for the benefit of Europe."
