US Always Comes First Detrimentally: The Global Warming Issue
The United States of America holds the lion’s share of the most negatively influential country on the environment globally.
Severe calls warning of the possible aftermath of the global warming dilemma on Earth have been made. The effects of the "catastrophic issue" as described by senior leaders around the world have been in several international media outlets, due to the fact that big cities might be flooded, with sea levels rising above land.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated severe warnings during the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. He addressed the world leaders attending the summit, by calling for immediate action to a feasible extent. Johnson demanded a short-term solution to prevent any catastrophic results during his speech.
The British PM has delivered a stark warning on the effects of a rise in global temperature on countries: “Three degrees and you can add more wildfires and cyclones—twice as many; five times as many droughts and 36 times as many heatwaves. Four degrees, we say goodbye to whole cities: Miami, Alexandria, Shanghai.. all lost beneath the waves”, Boris added.
During the summit as well, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that “either humanity can stop climate change or else climate change will stop humanity”, Guterres proceeded “We’re digging our own graves, the world is changing".
What are the main companies affecting climate change?
A recent report by InfluenceMap revealed the top companies with the greatest impact on climate in the world, the United States of America took the lead on top ten ranks, with five spots for American oil companies.
The report listed that US oil companies lead the list of the most negative and influential companies on climate globally:
1st: ExxonMobil
2nd: Chevron
4th: Southern Company
5th: Sempra Energy
7th: ConocoPhillips
Globally, the United States is the second-highest greenhouse gas emitter after China and the highest emitter in per-capita emissions.
On the individuals' level, the carbon footprint for individuals in the US is one of the highest rates in the world, estimated at around 16 tons per person.
America's approach towards global warming
Previously, the American negligence to the global warming issue was crystal clear, and to rub salt on the wound, the former American President Donald Trump announced that his administration will withdraw from the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement, as his country is holding the biggest share of responsibility considering that the agreement itself as a deal that aimed to hobble, disadvantage and impoverish the US more than other countries.
Three years later, the US administration implemented their decision and withdrew from the agreement.
The reasons that made the USA withdraw from the agreement are several:
First, due to their economic policies towards certain sectors, especially the oil companies industry which generates huge profits. Thus, adding limitations on such sectors will eventually cause a drop in the profit margins.
Moreover, Donald trump on different occasions denied the very existence of climate change, considering it an exaggerated issue, and demanded the withdrawal from the agreement.
Obviously, the American approach towards climate change is a soloist one. its approach is that where the interests of the US administration are the first and only priority.
Based on the above premises, the United States of America holds the lion’s share of the most negatively influential country on the environment globally. Deliberately and with prior notice, the American administration continues to dismay the negative effect of carbon emissions from their industries. Even Joe Biden’s era, the current administration, is facing opposition for any decision that might decrease the emissions of the oil industries since self-interests and business come first for America.
