AOC Sends Political Message through Met Gala Gown
Making a bold political statement, Democrat lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attends the Met Gala wearing a white gown with"tax the rich" on its back.
"Fashion's biggest night out" was held on Monday, and it had many extravagant looks. It was attended by the world's most famous celebrities of the time, from YouTubers to TikTokers and front-row movie stars, as well as influencers and artists who did not hesitate to put on their most expensive clothes and show off to the poverty-stricken world what it is like to be as fortunate as they are.
The show was not exempt from political appearances, as New York's Democratic Congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, showed up to the gala to say, "Tax the rich." The message was written in scarlet capital letters on the backside of a Brother Vellies white gown.
Social media was in an uproar over the Democrat's attendance with such a bold statement, yet wearing a luxury gown and buying a ticket that costs $35,000 to sit at a table worth $300,000.
However, Ocasio-Cortez argued in a tweet following the media frenzy that many New York officials are invited to attend due to their responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public, so she was one of several who did attend the event that evening.
And before haters get wild flying off the handle, New York elected officials are routinely invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing and supporting the city’s cultural institutions for the public. I was one of several in attendance in this evening.🤗

"It's really about having a real conversation about fairness and equity in our system, and I think this conversation is particularly relevant as we debate the budget and reconciliation bill," said the Congresswoman.
Attending her first Met Gala, AOC said, "We can't just play along, but we need to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions. While the Met is known for its spectacle, we should have some conversations about it."
She turned attending the Met into an opportunity to send a political message, as she asserted that it was important to do so because most talks about taxation happen among lower-class people. Some praised her statement while others criticized it, calling it hypocritical.
AOC has been known for her socialist and anti-Israeli apartheid policies, as she has always pushed for and supported anti-Israeli bills, which, at the time of the latest Israeli war on Gaza, would have blocked arms sales to "Israel".
