Gladiator Sequel Officially in the Works
You will be entertained!
At the age of 83, Director Ridley Scott doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. In 2021 alone, the legendary filmmaker is releasing not one, but two films: The first being the medieval epic The Last Duel, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Comer, and the second being the thriller House of Gucci, starring Lady Gaga. Both films will be released respectively in October and November, marking a busy season for Scott.
The filmmaking veteran who helmed cinema classics such as Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), and Thelma & Louise (1991) is now gearing up for his next film, a massive epic about Napoleon titled Kitbag. The historical blockbuster will focus on Napoleon’s rise to power, reuniting the director with both Jodie Comer and Joaquin Phoenix, who played the merciless Roman Emperor Commodus in Gladiator (2000).
And this is what you all came for, Gladiator and its long-gestating sequel. Indeed, Scott has revealed that right after Kitbag is done, he will move on to the sequel of the 2000 Best Picture winner.
The news came directly from Scott himself, who said “I’m already having (the next) Gladiator written now… So when I’ve done Napoleon (meaning Kitbag), Gladiator will be ready to go.”
With events of the sequel taking place 20 years after Maximus’ journey, rumors have mentioned the story could focus on Lucius, the nephew of Commodus whose viewpoint on life is now highly influenced by commander-turned-gladiator Maximus, played by Russell Crowe who won the best actor Oscar for his role in the original film.
The British director’s schedule is quite a doozy, but he’s making sure to keep us fascinated with his constantly updated filmography, while rhetorically asking us: “Are you not entertained?”
