New release 'Scream' tops Spiderman in US box office
After nearly a month at the helm of the box office, Spiderman: Now Way Home slides down to second place after "Scream" dominated the screens upon its release.
A new reimagining of the Scream franchise has topped the United States box office this weekend after the latest installation of the Spiderman franchise, Spiderman: No Way Home, dominated the box office for nearly a month since the movie hit the theaters.
Paramount's release earned $30.6 million over the weekend, and it is expected to make $35 million by Monday, making for fresh good news for the industry adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and for the horror movie industry as well, showing they still have their lure.
Although it did not make figures like Halloween 12, which opened to $49.4 million, Scream's opening was still considered great, with many saying it was "a strong opening."
The movie has made gains for Paramount, as the budget was only $25 million, and the sequel made that amount with plenty of change just two days in.
The influx was expected; the franchise has received a lot of love over time, and this movie came after an 11-year-long hiatus.
Spiderman lagged behind, making $20.8 million, marking an end to its reign as the lead movie at the box office. Sony's production has so far made $704 million domestically and $926 million internationally.
This is how the box office is looking like:
Sing 2, an animated musical produced by Universal with quite a renowned cast, occupied the third spot, making $8.3 million.
The fourth spot went to another Universal work, spy thriller The 355, making $2.3 million. It stars Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz.
In fifth place came the 20th Century's The King's Man, a spy action comedy with $2.3 million in revenue.
