Russia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) are set to officially begin building a bridge over the Tumen River, which marks the border between the two nations, according to Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang, Alexander Matsegora, in an interview for RIA Novosti.
Preparatory work is underway, with the two countries finalizing project documents and assembling construction teams and equipment.
Matsegora said, "However, we do not have long to wait, I hope that soon we will witness the solemn ceremony of the start of construction of this, without exaggeration, the most significant and important from a practical point of view object of bilateral cooperation for all the past decades."
The ambassador mentioned that Moscow and Pyongyang have several promising bilateral projects, both major and minor, with some expected to be revealed in the future.
During Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Pyongyang on June 18-19, 2024, the two nations signed multiple agreements. The meeting aimed to enhance trade and security ties to support the DPRK against the United States.
The countries' partnership is an "engine for accelerating the building of a new multi-polar world," and Putin's visit demonstrates the "invincibility and durability" of their friendship and unity, DPRK's KCNA wrote.
Later the same year, the DPRK ratified a landmark defense pact with Russia, deepening security cooperation, state media reported on November 12.
The agreement formalized months of tightening military bonds between the two nations.
Seoul and its ally, the United States, accused the DPRK of sending thousands of troops to Russia, where they have been allegedly provided with Russian uniforms and are reportedly stationed near the border close to Kursk, which Moscow and Pyongyang denied.
Kim Jong Un to visit Russia
Moreover, Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko confirmed on Thursday that preparations are underway for Kim Jong Un's visit to Russia later this year, as reported by state-run news agency TASS. He also noted that a visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Pyongyang is being arranged.
