An award-winning night at the Oscars
Deaf drama CODA wins best picture, and Will Smith slaps Chris Rock for a joke about his wife.
The Oscars on Sunday were memorable for many reasons.
CODA, a feel-good indie movie starring deaf actors in key parts, won the best picture, Jessica Chastain won the best actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Disney's Encanto won the best-animated feature.
The night began with a performance by Beyonce, and the Ukrainian crisis was touched on briefly.
Philippe Rousselet, the film's producer thanked the Academy for "letting our CODA make history tonight."
The film wasn't the only thing to make history. Will Smith's punching of Chris Rock on stage for making a joke about his wife will surely be an event to remember.
Smith won the best actor for his role in King Richard, and as he returned to the stage to accept his award tearfully, he apologized to the Academy and "all my fellow nominees."
Netflix's The Power of the Dog won the best director for Jane Campion, the third woman in Oscars history.
Ariana Debose, who debuted on Broadway, won best supporting actress for Anita in West Side Story.
Japanese arthouse film Drive my Car was named best international film.
Billie Eilish took home the award for best original song for No Time to Die.
The sci-fi epic Dune won the most awards of the night, taking home six in craft and technical categories, including outstanding sound, soundtrack, editing, production design, visual effects, and cinematography.
Halyna Hutchins was paid tribute "in Memorium" after she was accidentally shot by Alec Baldwin last year on the set of Rust.
