The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Algorithm
It was only a matter of time, really, before artists began using AI in fields that were until now "strictly human" domains. For the first time, India is launching an exhibition set in Kolkata later in September, featuring the works of AI art pioneer, Harshit Agrawal.
The Emami Art gallery in Kolkata poses serious questions about how using AI can shape art. Is AI the future of contemporary art? Is AI a competitor for artists, or a collaborator? These issues will be tackled in "EXO-Stential - AI Musings on the Posthuman," which is the title of the exhibition.
How it goes?
In creating AI art, artists need to know how to write algorithms, while also visualizing the desired outcome. What these algorithms do is that they give the machine general directions, while also allowing it to familiarize itself and gain knowledge of art by analyzing images. Then, the machine uses what it has learned to create an image.

Machinic Situatedness, a piece by Agrawal
The exhibition is set to begin next week on September 11 and will last until the end of the month. Agrawal said on his Instagram, "Let's engage consciously with this beast we're increasingly being immersed in, journeying into the #posthuman, instead of being simply sucked into it!"
