Four German airports to cancel departures on Monday amid strike plans
Germany's services sector trade union is calling for a strike to demand higher compensation for weekend and evening work and better overtime pay for its workers.
German media reported that the airports of Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, and Bremen will cancel departures on Monday due to warning strikes.
Germany's services sector trade union, Verdi, has called on security staff to hold a warning strike at Berlin Brandenburg Airport as well as at Hamburg, Hanover, and Bremen airports, German newspaper Welt reported.
The company managing the airports clarified that nearly 200 flights will be canceled in Berlin, affecting some 27,000 passengers.
Verdi is calling for the strike to demand higher compensation for weekend and evening work and better overtime pay for its workers, the report indicated.
Trade unions have been calling for a 10.5% increase in base wages, which is about an additional 500 euros ($544) per month.
Last month, the trade union announced a 24-hour strike to demand a pay raise, which affected airports in a number of German cities.
In early March, Verdi also launched calls for public action across several German cities to protest low wages and working conditions in the transport industry.
