Russia: Burger King asks Trade Ministry to lift ban on cheese imports
The booming local cheese industry in Russia is creating competition with imported cheese.
The Burger King branch in Russia has appealed to the Ministry of Trade in Russia, requesting to lift the embargo on cheese, saying that Russian producers are finding difficulty in keeping up with the cheese demands.
"Burger King appealed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade with a request to lift counter-sanctions related to the supply of imported cheese to Russia," the company said in a statement.
The embargo on Russia has boosted cheese production in Russia, rendering cheese made by private Russian dairies as posing a competition to imported goods in quality.
The senior manager added, "However, with the launch of a range of delicious new cheese products that have sparked sales hype... local producers are struggling to keep up with the demand."
As a response to sanctions imposed on Russia in August 2014, Russia banned the import of some agricultural products, raw materials, and food from a number of countries. The banned goods include meats, sausages, fish, seafood, vegetables, fruits, and dairy products.
The ban's term has been extended to 2022.
