Spiegel: Russian oil ban to cause economic problems for east Germany
Sabine Rennefants, a journalist for Der Spiegel, warned of the economic devastation that a prospective Russian oil embargo might cause in eastern Germany.
According to Rennefants, "The future of the East- economic, social and political- is decided in Schwedt an der Oder."
She stated that the oil embargo threatens the viability of a nearby oil refinery, which obtains raw materials entirely from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline.
Rennefants warned that "the PCK refinery could be the first German victim of the crisis in Ukraine."
Earlier, the leader of the German Industrial Union (BDI), Siegfried Russwurm, stated that a Russian gas embargo would be disastrous for the German economy.
