UK Police Brace for new road blockages amid Friday's fuel protests
Fuel price protesters are set to cause another disruption on July 22, and police anticipate “slow-moving roadblocks” on major roads across the country.
A second massive protest against soaring fuel prices in the United Kingdom is set to be carried out on July 22, with the police anticipating "slow-moving roadblocks" on several junctions of simultaneously several major highways, Avon and Somerset police said on Thursday.
The first fuel protest in the UK took place on July 4, and it affected the M4 highway from England to Wales and resulted in 12 arrests.
In a statement published on the website of Avon and Somerset police, Superintendent Tony Blatchford said, "Our protest liaison team has been engaging with the organiser so we can inform the public of the likely disruption and help to minimise it. Nevertheless, drivers can expect journey times will likely be longer than normal, especially on motorways, which often tend to be at their busiest at this time of year."
Traffic jams on various roads from morning time until around early afternoon are expected by the police.
Energy prices in Europe have been surging since 2021 as part of a global trend. After the start of the war in Ukraine and the adoption of packages of sanctions by the West against Russia, inflation began to rise and fuel prices skyrocketed in the UK.
