Uttarakhand, a state in north India, was particularly hit heavily: According to SA Murugesan, secretary of the state's disaster management department, 48 deaths have been confirmed in the state.
Infrastructure has also been harmed: In Nainital, the town's most prominent lake broke its banks, causing damage to bridges and rail tracks. Rescuers from India's paramilitary National Disaster Response Force were evacuating residents in areas affected by landslides.
Last week, around 42 people died in Kerala, southern India, while 77 people died in Nepal.
