30% of London Covid cases made up of Omicron variant
Fears of increased precautions are looming in London, as it is now the fastest-growing area for the new Omicron variant, along with Scotland.
The British are worried old restrictions will be reinstated as London is seeing a sharp rise in Omicron variant cases in all 32 boroughs.
In the 2020 holiday season, a similar wave of the Alpha variant was sweeping the city.
Of England's nine regions, London saw the sharpest increase in infections in the week of December 4, a 25.3% jump and the highest since January. Of the 100,000 tested, 474.7 were found positive.
Death and hospitalization have not dramatically increased, but according to previous data regarding the time which Covid takes to develop, this may only be temporary.
Michael Gove, the Communities Secretary said the new information is "very challenging."
"We know that we have the highest number of Covid infections across the UK recorded today since January 9. We know the Omicron variant is doubling every two to three days in England, and possibly even faster in Scotland," he said.
Gove indicated that 30 percent of cases are of the Omicron variant and "of course we only identified Omicron in this country a fortnight ago."
58,194 new covid infections and 120 deaths were reported in the UK within 28 days of testing positive.
