Beijing follows Shanghai and lifts Covid-19 restrictions
After Shanghai allows approximately 25 million people to roam freely, Beijing also lifts restrictions despite maintaining testing conditions.
19 new infections Sunday in the Chinese capital of Beijing after easing covid-19 restrictions in the city. City officials have announced that as of Monday, schools, and offices can resume in-person presence.
China is committed to a zero-Covid strategy to wipe out clusters as they emerge. As China lifted the ban on Shanghai in mid-may, it is today doing the same for Beijing. This metropolis of 22 million people, Beijing, went into lockdown earlier in April after a resurgence of Covid-19 led to just under 2,000 infections.
According to the city's government, as of Monday, customers are welcomed into restaurants and public transport once again, under the condition that they tested negative in the previous three days.
In Shanghai, 25 million inhabitants have been able to move freely since Wednesday. Today, Beijing is returning to life as usual but with conditions. However, two districts in Beijing, continue to have restrictions set in place due to the number of covid-19 cases. Furthermore, hundreds of thousands of people across the two cities continue to face restrictions after being designated as close contacts of infected people.
