The UK neglects pregnant refugees
Following reports that pregnant immigrants were not fed or inspected by physicians or midwives after landing in the UK, the Home Office faces calls for a probe.
After claims that pregnant refugees are not being fed or inspected by physicians or midwives after landing in the UK, the Home Office is facing calls for an investigation.
It is claimed that a 38-week-pregnant first-time mother was not examined by a doctor for several weeks after crossing the Channel. A later examination of her revealed that she had a pathological phobia of pregnancy and the baby had a breech presentation.
Others claimed that pregnant mothers were being given water instead of food, with a lack of any privacy while being inspected by security officers.
These claims come amid government plans to force the councils to accept unaccompanied children arriving in the UK in small boats.
Reports say that more than 100 children are currently living in hotels due to the shortage of child-friendly homes.
Last month 27 people, including three children and a pregnant woman, drowned when their boat sank off the coast of France, in the single biggest loss of life of the Channel crisis so far.
