This is the second major road incident involving Iranian pilgrims in less than a week. On August 13, the Red Crescent confirmed that a bus crash on the highway between the southern Iraqi city of Basra and the Shalamcheh border crossing claimed five lives and left 57 others injured. Most of those involved were from Iran’s Khuzestan province and had entered Iraq to participate in Arbaeen.
Arbaeen, which ended on August 14 this year, is considered the largest annual religious gathering for Shiite Muslims. The pilgrimage commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, during the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. Millions of devotees from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and other countries make the journey to Iraq each year to walk toward the imam’s shrine.
