A 7-year-old Italian girl who was on vacation in Germany with her parents has died after a stone statue fell on her at a Munich hotel, German police said Sunday.
According to the police, Lavinia Trematerra was hit by a roughly 200-kg (440-lb) statue in the hotel's courtyard on Friday evening. The child was freed by people at the scene who also called emergency services. However, she died later at a Munich hospital.
The statue was not attached to the ground and fell on top of Lavinia while she was playing, the Italian news agency Ansa said.
"You are and will always be our angel. Love of our life," the mother posted on Facebook.
Her father, Michele Trematerra, said, "Our life has changed."
The reason the statue toppled over was not clear, and the police said an investigation was ongoing.
