At least 11 people were injured in a mass stabbing at a Walmart in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday, in what authorities described as a random act of violence. According to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office, a 42-year-old man entered the store around 4:45 pm and used a folding knife to carry out the attack.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. Munson Healthcare, the largest hospital in northern Michigan, confirmed it was treating all 11 victims. As of late Saturday, six people were reported to be in critical condition, and five others remained in serious condition.

The knife-wielding attacker was ultimately subdued by two brave shoppers before authorities arrived and took him into custody.

The hospital urged the public for understanding, noting that its emergency department was handling an unusually high volume of patients due to the Traverse City Walmart stabbing incident.
A sheriff’s deputy arrived within minutes and took the suspect into custody. Bystanders in the store helped restrain the attacker and assisted injured victims before medical personnel arrived.
Eyewitness Tiffany DeFell, 36, who was in the parking lot during the incident, described the chaos. "It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out," she said.
Investigation underway; Walmart and officials respond
Law enforcement quickly secured the area and began interviewing employees and witnesses. Footage showed emergency vehicles filling the shopping center’s parking lot, where several other retail stores are located.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer posted on social media: “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”
Walmart also issued a statement: "Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders."
Traverse City, located about 255 miles (410 km) north-west of Detroit on the coast of Lake Michigan, is a well-known holiday destination. Saturday’s attack shocked the local community and prompted renewed discussions around public safety in retail environments.
