Colorado truck driver sentence slashed to 10 years
This comes after more than 5 million people, including family members of the victims, signed a petition requesting the reduction of Aguilera-Mederos' sentence.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced Thursday that he is commuting the 110-year imprisonment sentence of the Colorado truck driver which he has received for an interstate wreck that killed four people. The governor described the initial sentence as "highly atypical and unjust."
According to a clemency letter from Polis, Rogel Aguilera-Mederos will now serve a 10-year sentence and will be eligible for parole on December 30, 2026.
Aguilera-Mederos was imprisoned in October on four counts of vehicular homicide and 23 other charges related to the crash, Colorado's First Judicial District Attorney's Office stated.
The crash
Aguilera-Mederos told investigators that he was driving a semi-tractor-trailer at 85 mph in April 2019 when the brakes failed. According to an arrest affidavit, he attempted to pull over to the shoulder to avoid stopped traffic, but another semi had already stopped there.
The crash resulted in a 28-car pileup, killing four people, according to the Lakewood Police Department at the time. Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 24, William Bailey, 67, Doyle Harrison, 61, and Stanley Politano, 69, were all killed.
The lengthy sentence drew national attention, with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian calling for a reduced sentence due to the fact that the whole thing was an accident. More than 5 million people, including family members of the victims, signed a petition requesting the reduction of Aguilera-Mederos' sentence.
