Death toll from Ecuador March landslide deaths rises to 50
The massive landslide occurred in the city of Alausi in the province of Chimborzo on March 26.
The death toll from a major landslide triggered by heavy rains in Ecuador's Andean region-- sweeping down parts of the city of Alausi-- has risen to 50, and over 30 people are still missing, as per local authorities.
"At the moment, the number of deaths is 50," Ecuador's Attorney General's Office (FGE) tweeted.
The massive landslide occurred in the city of Alausi in the province of Chimborzo on March 26.
Ecuador's disaster agency had warned of potential landslide danger for a 247-hectare area in Alausi in February, which included the affected area. Heavy rains also destroyed roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in Alausi. In the Andean provinces, similar warnings were issued by authorities on March 31 due to the imminent risk of floods and landslides.
The National Secretariat for Risk Management in Ecuador estimates that the landslide has affected 500 local households. Over 160 homes have been damaged, and nearly 60 have been completely destroyed.
It is worth noting that the Andes is an area highly susceptible to natural disasters, including earthquakes, floods, and volcanic activity.
