Death toll from Pakistan wedding boat accident tops 50
The death toll of an overcrowded wedding boat accident exceeds 50 in Pakistan.
The death toll from a boat that capsized while transporting a wedding party in Pakistan earlier this week is thought to have surpassed 50, with officials saying Wednesday that there was no hope of finding more survivors.
The overcrowded vessel capsized Monday on the storm-swollen Indus River in Sadiqabad, central Punjab province, carrying approximately 100 passengers.
Till now, 26 bodies have been recovered, mostly of women and children, but a similar number of people are still missing and presumed dead, according to officials.
"It's been more than 48 hours since the incident so there's no chance of finding survivors," Kashif Nisar Gill, a spokesman for the district administration told AFP.
According to Gill, the majority of the survivors were men who managed to swim ashore.
