"How to Murder Your Husband" author gets life for husband's murder
The writer was convicted in May of second-degree murder for her husband's death.
Nancy Crampton Brophy, romance novelist, and writer of the essay "How to Murder Your Husband", was sentenced on Monday to life in prison for her husband's murder.
The 71-year-old was convicted late in May for the murder of her husband in June 2018. Chef Daniel Brophy was gunned down at his workplace at a culinary school.
Prosecutors say the 63-year-old was shot twice: once in the back, and then in the chest at close range.
As for the motive behind the murder, the novelist's works were not big sellers, she was facing financial difficulties, and the chef had a life insurance policy worth more than $1 million.
Moreover, she had bought a "ghost gun" assembly kit, which investigators later found hidden at a storage facility.
However, the defense said the state's evidence was circumstantial, explained that Crampton-Brophy was better off financially with her husband alive, and brought in witnesses who said the two had a very loving relationship.
As for the ghost gun kit, she told the jury it was part of research for a future book she was writing.
