India Summons Amazon Executives over Marijuana Smuggling
Under the guise of dry stevia leaves, smugglers have used Amazon India to smuggle 1,000 kilograms of Marijuana into the country.
On Sunday, Indian police arrested two men who were caught red-handed smuggling 20 kg of marijuana. Looking into the situation, they realized that the perpetrators have been doing so through Amazon and distributing it to other states.
It turned out that under the guise of dry stevia leaves, smugglers have used Amazon India to smuggle 1,000 kilograms of Marijuana into the country.
In a police statement, it was reported that the marijuana smuggled was worth $148,000.
On Monday, Manoj Singh, a senior police official, said that Amazon authorities were summoned and required to provide information about how the drug has been entering the country and how Amazon allows its sale.
"The international company has the power of artificial intelligence, so it's a big thing happening on their platform," Singh said. "There is involvement of Amazon at many levels in this marijuana delivery - from providing logistical support to delivery." He continues, "The lawyers from Amazon will probably visit us tomorrow."
A spokesperson for Amazon commented on the matter, “We do not allow the listing and sale of products which are prohibited under law to be sold in India."
