India to overtake China as most populous nation in 2023
The United Nations reports that India will officially overtake China as the most populous country in 2023.
India will overtake China as the world's most populous country this year, while China's population will continue to decline in the coming decades, according to the World Population Review.
"India is projected to surpass China as the most populated country in the world sometime during 2023, at which time China's annual growth rate will be between -0.1% and -0.3%, while India's growth rate will be between 0.69% and 0.92%," it said.
China's population is over 1.42 billion, while India's is 1.41 billion as of last September, according to the US-based demographic monitor. Given current trends, China's population is expected to fall to 1.2 billion by 2060, while India's is expected to grow to nearly 1.7 billion.
The United States Census Bureau reported that the global population was expected to exceed 7.9 billion on New Year's Day. This implies the global population has grown by about 1% or more than 73 million people from New Year's Day 2022.
There will be 4.3 births and two deaths each second worldwide in January, according to the Census Bureau.
