New York Mayor-Elect Says His First Three Paychecks Will be in Bitcoin
New York City's Mayor-elect announces that his first three paychecks will be in bitcoin and hopes to make the city the center of cryptocurrency.
New York Mayor-elect Eric Adams said on Thursday he would take his first three paychecks in bitcoin and signaled his intention to make his city the "center of the cryptocurrency industry" after he takes office in January.
"In New York, we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in bitcoin when I become mayor," Adams announced on his Twitter account.
The Mayor-elect expressed that "NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!"
Adams' statement comes after Miami Mayor Francis Suarez also tweeted that he will be paid his first paycheck in bitcoin, which is considered the world's largest cryptocurrency.
In June, the newly-elected Democrat mayor vowed in a speech that New York City would become "the center of all the technology."
Edward Moya, a senior market analyst at FX broker Oandam said that Adam's statement shows that bitcoin "is attracting a wide range of interest."
However, Moya pointed out that "Adams is not a very influential person for swaying the people that are on the fence to join the cryptoverse."
