An NYPD officer was stabbed in the head with a machete on new year.
An NYPD officer was stabbed in the head with a machete by a 19-year-old, during New Year's Eve celebrations near Times Square.
Witnesses first heard gunshots and saw dozens of cops rush to the bloody scene around 9:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, just blocks away from where thousands had gathered to ring in 2023.
According to NBC New York, the suspect swung a machete at a group of police officers stationed just outside the Times Square perimeter, slashing one.
Another officer opened fire, striking the suspect in the shoulder. According to officials, all of the injured were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are in serious but stable condition.
A police source told the New York Post, "No backpacks or umbrellas in Time Square. They forgot to mention machetes.'"

The Post report also mentions the crowd in the area becoming rowdy and attempting to tear down barricades around an hour before the shooting.
Another man was injured in a stabbing at Bryant Park on 42nd street following a knife attack at around 8:45 pm. That victim is also in stable condition in Bellevue.
This happened just a few blocks away from where a man was stabbed eight times. The perpetrator of that attack is still at large.

An NYPD spokesperson described the homeless victim, 41, as being 'uncooperative' after he was stabbed around eight times on the street close to west 40th street and 7th avenue around 11 am.
The victim is being treated at Bellevue Hospital and is in serious but stable condition, according to the police.
This year, fatal stabbings and slashings have increased by an alarming 37 percent in New York. So far in 2022, the NYPD has recorded 96 blade-involved killings, compared to 70 during the same period in 2021, when such offenses were already up from previous years.
Stabbings and slashings are up 10% this year, with 4,344 compared to 3,954 last year, according to the Daily Mail.
