According to New York Police Chief Keechant Sewell, the young woman was returning from her high school in the Bronx with another 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old guy.
Sewell detailed that a man walking on the opposite side of the street pulled out a gun and fired repeatedly while arguing with someone.
The first teen was struck in the chest, while the other two were struck in the leg and buttocks. All three were rushed to the hospital, but the most critically injured, who should have had a "bright future", died as a result of her injuries, according to the NYPD chief.
The other two adolescents were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.
Police have acquired CCTV footage, and although no arrests have been made, they vowed those responsible would be held accountable by the law. This is the second occurrence of stray bullets targeting youth in New York this week.
A 12-year-old child died in Brooklyn on March 31 while eating in a parked vehicle. In the same vehicle, a 20-year-old lady was also hurt.
Eric Adams, a former police officer, was elected as New York's new Democratic mayor in late 2021 on a promise to combat crime and the proliferation of illicit guns in the metropolis of nine million people, where crime has grown drastically since the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020.
We lost a 16 year old baby in the Bronx today. We pray for this young girl, for her family, and for the other two victims in the hospital.

It's a tragedy.
It's unacceptable.
It's why we can't abandon our streets to gun violence. https://t.co/Alk4DA9K7c
