Syrian security forces have launched a manhunt for prisoners who escaped following a standoff at a detention facility in the northern countryside of Aleppo, authorities announced on Friday.
Search operations remain ongoing to apprehend the fugitives.
According to a statement from the Aleppo Governorate, Colonel Mohammad Abdel Ghani, Director of General Security, confirmed the incident via the governorate’s official Telegram channel.
"On Friday morning, we received a report regarding a standoff inside a prison in northern Aleppo, where several inmates managed to breach the facility’s walls and seize control for a period of time," Abdel Ghani stated.
During the takeover, the prisoners reportedly seized weapons and took several personnel hostage. The prison in question, however, was not under the jurisdiction of the Interior Ministry’s prison administration, he noted, without specifying its official oversight.
Security forces swiftly intervened, regaining control of the facility and arresting several escapees. However, an unspecified number of prisoners remain at large.
Abdel Ghani affirmed that security operations will continue until all fugitives are captured and brought before the judiciary to face legal accountability.
