Turkey likely to ban French schools from enrolling new students
French schools in Turkey have been negotiating their status with the Turkish Education ministry for quite some time
Due to noncompliance with the ministry's standards, the Turkish Education Ministry is expected to prohibit French schools from registering new students and require them to transfer those already enrolled to Turkish schools, according to the Milliyet Daily on Sunday.
The publication said that French schools had been discussing their status with the Turkish ministry for quite some time. According to the article, the Turkish side handed a list of additional conditions in June that French schools must meet to maintain operations.
Turkey sent an official notice to the Charles de Gaulle school in Ankara and the Pierre Loti school in Istanbul in July, informing them that they would be barred from enrolling new pupils if they refused to comply with the newly implemented regulations, according to the newspaper.
A French delegation is due to visit Turkey in the next few days to negotiate the terms, according to the article.
France allegedly breached a treaty that only allowed it to open a limited number of schools in the country. Furthermore, around 90% of the schools' students are Turkish nationals, which alarms the country's authorities, according to the publication.
