Durham police confirm that three people were shot on Friday afternoon at a shopping mall in the city of Durham, North Carolina.

US Police reported a shooting at a shopping mall in the city of Durham, North Carolina in which at least seven people were seem to have been injured.

The shooting occurred on one of the busiest shopping days in the US, Black Friday.

Video footage on social media showed shoppers running through the shopping mall in terror. Other footage showed police officers accompanying shoppers out of the mall.

A shooting wounded six people at a mall in Durham, North Carolina.

One person was shot at a mall food court in Tacoma, Washington.

A shootout between "two groups who knew each other" left three people struck by ricocheting gunfire and three others injured in the ensuing chaos, city Police Chief Patrice Andrews said.

"This is not a situation where someone came into the mall and indiscriminately just began firing," she stressed.

One of the shooting victims was a 10-year-old boy who was hit by a bullet, whose injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Simultaneously, the shopping mall was closed as a large police presence responded.

A department store employee told local news outlets that he heard as many as six gunshots. The sound caused a stampede of Black Friday shoppers to run for the nearest exit.

Earlier, a security officer opened fire on a man suspected of attempting to steal merchandise from a Walmart during an altercation in a town in eastern Washington, police reported. The suspect pointed a gun at the officer, as he was leaving the store with the merchandise, prompting the shooting. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended at a nearby home, and then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
