'Israel's' collapse could fulfill Khamenei's 2040 prediction: Haaretz
Haaretz editor-in-chief Aluf Benn warns that "Israel" faces internal disintegration amid its ongoing war on Gaza and deep political fractures.

"Israel" is facing the threat of internal collapse, one that could fulfill the prediction of Iran's Leader, Sayyed Ali Khamenei, that the Israeli occupation entity would cease to exist by 2040, Haaretz's editor-in-chief Aluf Benn warned.
In an opinion piece, Benn highlighted the severity of the internal situation amid the ongoing genocidal war on Gaza, warning of its implications for "Israel's" future.
It noted parallels between the current state of the Israeli entity and the conditions that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union, remarking that the latter "wasn't defeated in a nuclear world war: It collapsed from within."
Based on this assessment, Benn stressed the need to formulate a vision for the "day after" that could stop "Israel’s" internal unraveling and disprove Sayyed Khamenei’s prediction.
According to the piece, "The first clause in that vision must be ending the war, before Gaza swallows Israel into itself, never to return."
No military solution can prevent internal collapse
Haaretz's editor-in-chief warned that there is no military solution, neither through a multi-layered defense system nor through a "daring long-range bombing" that can prevent the threat of "Israel’s" internal collapse.
While Benn highlighted that "Israel" may appear to be functioning well after 20 months of war, with a stable shekel, low unemployment, and crowded beaches and restaurants in Tel Aviv, he pointed to signs of deeper decay: rising crime, internal divisions, and a loss of hope.
Absolute attachment to US
Alongside domestic turmoil, the piece addressed "Israel’s" increasing dependency on the United States, particularly under President Donald Trump. It observed that across the political spectrum, there is an “absolute" attachment to the US, with the left viewing Trump "as a savior and a bringer of peace, just as the right pins its hopes for the depopulation of Gaza on him."
Leadership detached from reality
According to Benn, the Israeli leadership is "growing increasingly detached from reality" amid growing anxiety among settlers.
The writer sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of being "fixated on spreading conspiracy theories about the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023," which revolve around blaming protesters against the judicial overhaul of treason and absolving himself of responsibility.
Haaretz's editor-in-chief asserted that Netanyahu will be remembered internally as the leader who brought "Israel" to the brink of ruin and internationally "as a mass murderer consumed by messianic escapism."
Political system deepening divide
Benn argued that Netanyahu is cultivating a "cult of personality" to replace the government institutions, in a trend that only reinforces his isolation and paranoia about both real and imagined enemies.
"Thus, the political system is busy deepening internal division instead of rebuilding Israel from the ruins of judicial upheaval and endless war," he warned.
"He [Netanyahu] has no vision for the future, only further destruction," the writer indicated.
