Elon Musk reignited his criticism of US President Donald Trump's sweeping spending bill on Monday, denouncing it as fiscally reckless and threatening to form a new political party in response. The Senate continued deliberations through a marathon amendment session aimed at passing the legislation before July 4.
Once a prominent figure in Trump's orbit and a vocal supporter during his earlier presidency, Musk has now become one of the bill’s fiercest critics. His backlash highlights growing fractures within the conservative and libertarian wings of Trump’s base, especially over federal spending and debt.
"It is obvious with the insane spending of this bill, which increases the debt ceiling by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS, that we live in a one-party country – the PORKY PIG PARTY!!" Musk posted on X, the social platform he owns.
He added: "Time for a new political party that actually cares about the people."
Musk escalates threat over bill’s passage
In subsequent posts, Musk doubled down, accusing members of Congress who support the bill of betraying their constituents, declaring that “[T]hey will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth."
Later that evening, Musk warned: "If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day," emphasizing the need for “an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”
In response to Musk’s criticism, the White House pointed to Trump's recent interview with Fox News, where he addressed the entrepreneur’s frustrations.
“I think Elon is a wonderful guy, and I know he's going to do well, always. He's a smart guy,” Trump said, suggesting Musk’s outrage stemmed from the bill’s elimination of electric vehicle subsidies.
Musk, who previously spearheaded cost-cutting reforms through the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency, has long opposed excessive government expenditures. He argues Trump’s plan will balloon the national debt by over $3 trillion, despite its branding as fiscally responsible.
From ally to adversary
Earlier this month, tensions between Musk and Trump erupted into a full-blown public spat, as Musk unleashed a series of critical posts, some of which he later retracted. Still, the feud reflects a broader ideological rift.
Notably, on June 5, Musk floated the idea of forming a third party via an informal poll on X. Monday’s developments appear to bring that proposal closer to reality, as dissatisfaction with traditional party structures continues to mount among voters across the political spectrum.
