'We'll protect our national security': Iranian Foreign Ministry
The Iranian Foreign Ministry reaffirms its determination to protect national security and the interests of its people in the region, while condemning the G7's threats of sanctions and pressure on the Iranian population.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, underscored his country's unwavering commitment to "safeguarding its national security and the interests of its people in the region." He declared that Operation True Promise 2 represents "a clear manifestation of Iran's inherent right to legitimate self-defense."
The spokesperson's remarks were made in response to the G7 statement issued on Wednesday, which "unequivocally condemned Iran's attacks on Israel" and announced a coordinated response including new sanctions on Tehran.
Baghaei condemned the "threat of sanctions and pressure on the Iranian people," asserting that "the irresponsible interference of non-regional parties, including the United States, is the root cause of the destabilization of security in the West Asia region."
He further stated that the G7 statement on regional peace and security "should serve as a basis for pressuring the Zionist entity to cease its crimes in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria."
He said that the group’s members, particularly the United States, should take responsibility for the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the destabilization of security resulting from their unwavering support for the occupation.
On Wednesday, Joe Biden coordinated a call with all G7 members to organize and support a response to the Iranian missile attack.
According to the White House, Biden joined the call and discussed the events of the attack and a response, which would include possible sanctions.
He also confirmed to reporters that sanctions will be imposed on Iran, ahead of an anticipated call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
However, amid Israeli threats to respond to Tuesday's operations, Biden said he would not support an attack against Iran's nuclear assets.
