Chinese President Xi Jinping sent on Monday a congratulatory message to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad on his re-election.

In the message, Xi hailed the traditional friendship between China and Syria.

Furthermore, the Chinese president noted that Syria was one of the first Arab countries to establish diplomatic ties with China. Xi also stressed that he values the development of bilateral ties and is willing to work with the Syrian president to push forward the relationship when both sides are celebrating the 65th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Xi reiterated China's firm support for Syria to defend its national sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.

He also assured his counterpart that China will back Syria in its fight against COVID-19, economic recovery, and livelihood improvement.

Besides, the Chinese Foreign Ministry had earlier extended well-wishes to President Al-Assad.

“China and Syria are traditional good friends,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian has recently told a regular press briefing in Beijing.

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has won a second term in office after securing the absolute majority of votes in a transparent and democratic presidential election.
