How's the Pope Doing After Colon Surgery?
Pope Francis undergoes surgery due to a colon infection. He is doing well, and the recovery period is seven days "if there are no complications."
The Vatican announced that Pope Francis is in a good condition after undergoing surgery for colitis, saying that "he is doing well overall, alert and breathing on his own," he said that the surgery "lasted around three hours," and continued that the Pope will remain in the hospital for seven days, "barring any complications."
The Pope had alluded a week ago, on the eve of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, to the scheduled surgery, saying, "I ask you to pray to the Pope, pray in a special way. The Pope needs your prayers."
And on Monday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi sent Pope Francis "warm wishes for a speedy recovery," and the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, also published a tweet, in which he said, "Wishing my dear brother Pope Francis a speedy recovery to resume his devotion towards humanity."

The Pope is recovering on the tenth floor of the hospital in the same ward used by Pope John Paul II, where the late Pope underwent surgery 7 times, including after an assassination attempt in 1981 and to remove a colon tumor in 1992.
The Italian police and the Vatican police guarded the place.
Colitis, which is what Pope Francis suffers from, can lead to pain caused by an inflammation of the inner lining of the colon, which tends to spread with age.
A complication of this condition is an abnormal narrowing of the colon, and sufferers can suffer from lower abdominal pain, fever, and bleeding.
Possible causes include excessive pressure in the colon, a low-fiber and red meat-rich diet, according to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
The Vatican explained that the surgery that Pope Francis underwent resulted in half of his colon getting removed, adding that its remainder was connected directly to the rectum.
Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936, in Argentina. He lost part of his right lung at the age of 21. He also has a hip problem.
