Tunisian MP Rached Khiairi, arrested.
A security source reported to Al Mayadeen that suspended Tunisian MP Rached Khiari was arrested Wednesday.
The MP's Facebook page made a post saying that his home was raided by the security forces.
The Facebook statement said, "Hordes of special forces raided the home of MP Rached Khiari and several relatives' homes with the aim of arresting him."
"The Tunisian constitution prohibits that, and it does not give the President the right to suspend the immunity of dissident MPs," the statement added.
This comes after Tunisian President Kais Saied condemned his actions being described as a ‘coup,’ stating that they are in line with the Tunisian constitution.
Saied said, during a meeting with several "national organizations," said that the decisions he took "are an implementation of the constitution - not a coup."
Khiari had caused great controversy in Tunisia in April following a video he posted on Facebook, in which he accused President Kais Saied of "receiving foreign funding to increase his chances of winning the 2019 presidential elections."
After that video, the United States embassy in Tunisia refuted Khiari's claim, saying, "The United States did not provide any funding for President Kais Saied's campaign."
