US Capitol Riot: Police Officer Suicides Rise to 4
US four police officers, who responded to January 6 US Capitol attack, have taken their own lives.
The District of Columbia Police Department announced on Monday that two more officers who responded to the Jan. 6 riot at US Capitol had committed suicide, bringing the total number of known suicides by officers who guarded the building that day to four.
Department Spokesman Hugh Karo said in a statement that Metropolitan Police Officer Gunther Hashida was found dead at his home on Thursday, adding that another Metropolitan Police Officer named Kyle Devretag was also found dead on July 10. Karo said the cause of Devretag’s death was suicide as well.
Furthermore, officers Jeffrey Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and Howard Liebingod of the US Capitol Police, who had responded to the Capitol riots on January 6, both died by suicide.
It is worth mentioning that hundreds of supporters of former US President Donald Trump’s stormed the US Capitol on January 6 in a bid to overturn his election defeat, battling police in the hallways and delaying the certification of US President-elect Joe Biden’s victory for hours. US Capitol riots ended with four deaths, according to local police.
