Russia Says Afghans Capable of Handling Situation
The First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyanskiy, sees that "It is time for the Afghans to overcome all obstacles themselves."
Dmitry Polyanskiy, the First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, announced Wednesday that "Russia believes that, in light of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan, the Afghans must find a solution to the problems their country is facing, independently."
Polyanskiy told the press that Russia believes its time for the Afghans to overcome the obstacles in their country themselves, understand their country's needs and future, and the forms of development they desire.
This came in response to a question asked by a reporter on whether Russia would welcome a more effective problem-solving UN role in Afghanistan, where the security situation has been deteriorating for the past few months. The Russian diplomat answered by saying, "The Afghans are wise, and they will find a solution to the problems they are facing."
Moreover, a diplomatic source told Sputnik the United Nations Security Council is considering holding a meeting on the violence in Afghanistan on Friday, August 6.
Earlier this month, a Russian envoy, Zamir Kabulov, visited Afghanistan. He indicated that "the leaders of the Taliban are ready to reach a settlement."
