Haiti Demands an International Investigation
Haiti's government has asked the UN for assistance in conducting an international investigation into the assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
Haiti's government has asked the United Nations for assistance in starting an international investigation into the assassination of President Jovenel Moise last month, the country's embassy in the Dominican Republic said on Thursday.
A letter from Haiti
The UN said in a statement that Haiti demanded assistance through a letter sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Haitian government specifically requested an "international investigation commission" and a special tribunal to put the suspects on trial.
The letter, signed by Foreign Minister Claude Joseph, said that Haiti considers the attack on Moise at his property to be an international crime due to the alleged involvement of foreigners in its planning, funding, and execution.
Former Supreme Court judge among the suspects
Moreover, last Friday, the Haitian authorities announced the suspected involvement of former Supreme Court Judge Wendell Coq Thelot in the murder of Moise.
According to Reuters, the Haitian police brought new charges against the judge over her links to the assassination of President Moise, saying that she had met some of the Colombian mercenaries accused of killing him.
The assassination
Earlier, the US Department of Justice approved the Haitian government's request to assist the police in the investigation of the assassination of the Haitian President.
It is reported that Moise was shot dead, last July, at his home in Port-au-Prince, by what the Haitian authorities described as "a unit of killers", consisting of 26 Colombians and two Haitian Americans.
Local media reports stated that the suspects in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise admitted that they intended to arrest him, not kill him.
