100+ Students and Dozens of Teachers Kidnapped in Nigeria
A Nigerian paper relates that more than 100 school students were kidnapped in Zamfara State, northwest of Nigeria, and that this incident is one of many in the area.
The Nigerian Tribune wrote that gunmen kidnapped more than 100 students and dozens of teachers from a high school in Zamfara State, northwest of Nigeria. One local resident said that the gunmen broke into the school on Wednesday morning and randomly opened fire upon entering before they kidnapped the students and teachers.
More than 1100 students have been kidnapped from their schools and colleges in the area since December 2020.
Group kidnappings have become increasingly used by armed gangs aiming to secure a ransom.
Zamfara is one of 4 states northwest of Nigeria that have taken precautions in order to contain the security crisis, banning the sale of fuel in cans and the transport of wood in trucks in the hopes that this would disrupt the activity of gangs that roam the streets on motorcycles and camp out in the woods.
