Algeria hosts tripartite meeting on Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project
Algeria's Ministry of Energy says the third trilateral ministerial meeting on the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project will give impetus to the progress recorded.
Algeria will host Thursday the third trilateral ministerial meeting on the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline project, which links Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria.
In a statement, the Algerian Ministry of Energy said the meeting will mark the participation of the energy ministers of the three countries to discuss aspects of the project and give impetus to the progress recorded.
The project links Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria on a road that extends as far as 4000 km.
Europe's Energy Platform said the European Union has pre-empted the meeting with a visit to Nigeria in the past few days.
Deputy Director-General of the Energy Department at the European Commission, Matthew Baldwin, said the visit of the delegation of European Union representatives to Nigeria is a step in the ongoing partnership plans with Abuja, including support for investments, as well as the bloc's commitment to transforming existing gas projects into reality.
A few days ago, Baldwin said the European Union is seeking additional gas supplies from Nigeria, at a time when the bloc is preparing for a reduction in Russian supplies.
He also mentioned that the EU imports 14% of its total liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Nigeria, noting that there is a potential to double this percentage.
It is noteworthy that last month, Nigeria gave the green light to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to start a project to build a new gas pipeline that connects Africa with Europe.
