Arab League: Syria's return preceded by deliberations, consultations
Though Syria's return to the Arab League was not discussed in the meeting with the Arab League, many in the league foreshadow a welcoming return from the Syrian side.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said that "Syria's return to the Arab League was not raised in today's meeting between Arab foreign ministers, but we discussed the Syrian crisis in general."
Aboul Gheit added, during a press conference with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah and Arab foreign ministers in Kuwait, today, Sunday, that "the issue of the return of a state to occupy its seat is always preceded by deliberations, consultations and the presentation of a draft resolution. Member states' visions of Syria's obligations must be taken into consideration - all of that we have not yet reached, and therefore the matter has not been raised today.”
The Secretary-General addressed the Palestinian issue and indicated that "the current Israeli government, which the American side endorses, completely refuses to return to negotiations and provide an opportunity for the principle of a two-state solution."
Aboul Gheit had revealed in late October 2021 that Algeria, Iraq, and Jordan desired Syria's return to the league, which he considered "the beginning of momentum," adding that they are monitoring the Syrian reaction from afar, foreshadowing a welcome in a return.
Earlier, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry conveyed Cairo's hope that conditions for Syria's return to the Arab domain will be available and that the Syrian government will take measures to facilitate the return of Damascus to the Arab League.
In this context, the Secretary-General of Fatah’s Central Committee, Major General Jibril Rajoub, said in early January that "Syria's presence outside the Arab League is a disgrace to Arabs."
Syria's membership in the Arab League was suspended in late November 2011, after the outbreak of war in the country.
